Abstract:
This text proposes, in the tradition of Louis de Broglie, that the brain is a matter-wave system. In this picture, thoughts can be essentially considered resonance's of matter-waves. Long-term potentiation and long-term depression can both be describable in terms of waves and, perhaps, govern the process by which the brain evolves over time. Consciousness may be the matching of wave-phases of the brain's matter-wave with environmental resonance's. What we call "attention" may be the selective process (or focus) of the highest wave amplitudes in the brain by the mind, the noumenal "brain-in-itself". Essentially, these are Immanuel Kant's ideas, this time applied to the brain. Attention and consciousness are also discussed. It is proposed that different brain-states can be better understood in-terms of waves than by the present Newtonian "particle" description now given to us by neuroscientists. Hence, this model may have a significant amount of power in describing observations not presently understood by the "particle" picture. Sleep, brain drugs, mental illness, fevers as well as Kerlian photography, color, auras, mental telepathy and religious awakenings are discussed in-terms of the matter-wave model of the brain. The neurons that compose the brain are shown to be wave systems and at the synaptic gap--particle-like impulses. So, if this is the case, the brain itself also may be a wavelike quantum mechanical system. Also discussed is the proposal that every neuron contains wave frequencies from every other neuron in the brain, a kind of holistic approach to the brain. This may be similar to David Bohm's ideas concerning wholeness. Other evidence for a quantum mechanical wavelike system in the brain include the backward-in-time "missing millisecond" experiments where electrical events occur in reverse order from what is normally deemed possible. Among other things, this suggests that free will may be a kind of illusion, an illusion that our conscious mind essentially prefers to maintain. Furthermore, the continuing growth patterns of the brain are proposed as being guided by the brain's internal frequencies. Also discussed in this text is the Mind-Brain-Soul relationship as well as perhaps the role of God in this picture of the wave brain. The proposal is also made that all of existence is in essence supernatural. Might this view resolve Rene Descartes longstanding mind-body duality problem? Does God, the soul and the heavenly realm exist along with the mind, within the noumenal brain? The probable consequences of this matter-wave model of the brain are then discussed. And, much more! Introduction
That matter is a wave was first proposed in a descriptive mathematical way by the French physicist Louis de Broglie. This observation was confirmed experimentally several years later when electrons were found to behave precisely like photons of radiation--electrons demonstrated interference patterns like photons of light. The physicist Erwin Schrodinger used this confirmation as the basis for his now famous wave equation, the foundations of quantum mechanics. In the quantum mechanical picture, all matter and radiation are both particles and waves and neither of these description is superior to the other i.e., they both are equally valid descriptions. In describing experiments, physicists often utilize the description (involving either particles or waves) that is the most useful.
This text proposes that the brain is a matter-wave system. For the most part, neuroscientists in the past have "unconsciously" adopted the (Newtonian) particle approach to the brain. In this view, the brain is a "clump" of atoms acted upon by chemicals (even more atoms) and this is primarily the picture that we are given by neuroscientists. The author has never seen a "wave" description of the brain provided by neuroscience, although according to quantum mechanics, there should be one. Indeed, as mentioned above, the "wave" view should be equally as valid as the conventional Newtonian particle picture.
This text offers an alternative to the "reductionist" approach to the brain; the taking apart of the brain bit by bit to discover the specific functioning of each piece. The matter-wave model is a more "system-wide" approach (which is essentially what neuroscience has revealed about the brain!) where small resonance's or a dampening can have a minute effect upon the bigger overall picture. It is rather like an ocean wave, where one can see how very small ripple-like waves are integrated into the much larger long-wave disturbances i.e., the small has a cumulative effect upon the very large.
As we will see in this text, the "wave" picture of the brain may offer a quite powerful explanatory picture describing particular phenomenon that the particle picture cannot match. Perhaps, the up to now baffling mystery of consciousness and the question of what is "mind" may be better explained by the wave approach. All of these concepts, the mind, the soul, heaven and God, may be related to the noumenal aspects of the World.
As physicists have discovered in certain situations concerning their own models, the wave approach can often be the more useful description of many observations. As we might discover in this text, the brain may be just such a similar situation. The author believes so.
The Brain As A Matter Wave-System
What primarily led the author to conclude that a superior approach to understanding the brain might be as a matter wave system, is that many of the processes now taking place within the brain can be found to be describable in terms of waves. For example, the memory processes of long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD) can be understood in terms of as the interactions of waves with each other.
LTP is the brain process where two neuronal synapses "increase" the sensitivity of the neural connection based upon stimulation and LTD can be understood as "reducing" the sensitivity of the neural connection. LTP increases the likelihood of new neural pathways nearby and LTD decreases this possibility. Both processes are reversible.
Either brain process can be explained also in terms of waves, where LTP might be viewed as the interaction of two synaptic connection "waves" that are in-resonance and, hence, positively reinforcing each other. As we will discuss later, this increase in the probability of growth of the brain may be related to a wave resonance that arises from a DNA wave system.
Thus, two wave systems that are in-phase can positively reinforce each other and resonate creating an increased probability of a third connection--resonance is a type of synergistic effect. On the other hand, LTD , in the wave picture, can be pictured as an overall dampening of two neural connections with each other. This might take place when two neuronal waves are somewhat (or even precisely) out-of-phase with each other. As a general rule, this type of destructive interference interaction discourages new connections from forming. And so, this energy may arise from cellular DNA wave systems.
Therefore, it can be understood that the brain may essentially be a resonance system, that when in-resonance new pathways are encouraged and when dampened such new connections are discouraged. Brain processes then are resonance's who's job it is to create new neural networks. A matrix of a particular thought pathway may be a resonance throughout the various regions of the brain. Hence, thoughts might be resonance's that create repercussions across the neural network. So, thoughts are a sequence of wavelike disturbances that travel back and forth across the brain causing resonance's throughout.
Does Cellular DNA Wave Systems Force Brain Growth?
The author now believes that the double helix DNA structure is a wave system, where two entirely different wave systems interact. When interaction occurs and the two waves connect to each other, the result may be the double helix wave system. Hence, one wave (or one side of the strand of DNA) may be vibrating up and down, whilst the other side (or strand) might be vibrating at an out-of-phase oblique angle, thereby forcing the two wave systems when connected to take on the shape and form of the double helix. So, the brain itself arises as a resonant effect when the cells transfer their wave energy (and information) to the brain.
Brains, thus, spring forth naturally from any body of cells over time when the cellular DNA (which is driven by food energy) dumps its excess wave energy to a suitable region of adjacent cells in the form of gray matter. Potentiation may be the brain processes by which this brain growth occurs.
However, this may mean that the brain's energy does not come about from the brain itself, but arises from each individual cell in the body. The cells send this energy via DNA wave resonance's, which vibrate and send wave energy to the brain. So, the brain may be the last structure to form in the body evolving from the primitive inside (or lizard brain) to the more sophisticated cerebral cortex on the outside of the human brain.
Thus, each cell may drive brain evolution as it interacts with its environment. Yes, the author believes that environmental factors that affect the cells may cause DNA to go into a resonant state. This may ultimately drive brain growth, from the inside-out. So, the sensory organs may be understood as specialized cellular extensions of the brain that can lead to its growth. The holistic person can then be realized when each cell has a roughly equal hand in brain expansion. Intelligence, therefore, can be a measure of each cell's collective contribution to brain growth.
Resonance, The Mind And Consciousness
The brain, thus, might not be pictured as a series of neural connections, but rather as a matter wave "system" that resonates in particular regions and dampens in yet others. What we call consciousness and memory may be pictured as the collective resonance's and dampening of the entire brain-system.
Resonance's may also be messages sent from the senses i.e., visual, hearing, touch, taste and smell, translated by the sense organs into wavelike signals (more resonance's) that bring particular regions of the brain into resonance mode. These regions of resonance may be different (up to 50% or so) in different brains. Perhaps, it is the case that shortly after birth that whatever region that becomes resonant when, for example, the visual signals are sent by the developing eyes, becomes the region that is suited (and developed) for that unique function. Hence, the visual system may be assigned and developed by whatever signals do resonate with the signals sent from the eyes shortly after birth. Again, this may be in somewhat different regions in different brains.
The author has noticed that in a series of experiments performed by a Sir Peter Guy Manners of U. K. that very small particles of matter could be brought into a resonance mode with very high frequency sound waves. These particles would then form patterns that depend largely upon the frequency of the sound waves. In general, the higher the frequency of the sound, the greater may be the complexity of the patterns or minute loops observed. This is noteworthy because the patterns formed to the author appeared to be identical to a cross section of the brain. Also surprising, was the fact that the overall shape of the larger pattern formed was even hemispherical as is the brain (Braden, 1996).
The author speculates, therefore, that it may be the resonance's within the brain that might be responsible for the way that the sponge-like brain appears. While this remains admittedly only the author's speculation at best, it is the first indication that a connection may exist between the frequencies of the waves taking place in the brain and its growth patterns. The author has not heard of any previous explanation or theory as to why the brain appears as it does. So, this observation may add weight to the notion proposed here that the brain could be a quantum mechanical-like matter wave system.
This phenomenon known as resonance is similar somewhat to a loud tone produced by a musical instrument that brings a wine glass or tuning fork into resonance from across the room. In this case, however, we are speaking about the vibrations of a "matter wave" as a distinct region of the brain being brought into resonance by our sense organs (other matter waves). Neuronal connections, thus, are not strings of matter composed of particle-like atoms, but they are electric "wave" potentials that vibrate and come into resonance when excited. But, these resemble closer mechanical waves and not electromagnetic ones. This may be the case with DNA waves as well.
In the visual system, as we travel through space, the resonance's from the outside world are constantly changing as we move. These may cause changes in resonance's within the brain. These may become optical "tubes" if we are in linear motion. See the "Motion" text for further details about linear motion.
Colors can also be viewed as brain regions in resonance. A red (or any other color) object may cancel-out all colors except red and this red brings about a resonance in a particular region of the visual system. Certain psychedelic drugs can bring about resonance's in the brain regions responsible for color where none exists in the environment. More about drug effects subsequently.
Consciousness and perception may also be a resonance of the brain matter-wave system; an effect of the brain-system interfacing with the outside world. The environment through the senses sets the matter-wave system of the brain via LTP into a resonance mode. So, one's own thoughts may be internally generated resonance's. Perhaps, a superior way to picture this process might be that LPD neuron waves are waves that are somewhat held in-place, whilst LTP neuron waves are waves that are in-resonance.
The degree of consciousness that one may have might depends upon the collective degree of the brain wave-system being in-phase with the environment. The more interactive and resonant the brain-system is with the environment through the senses, the greater may be the degree of consciousness. Or stated differently, individuals with the greatest alignment to (and resonance with) the physical world, have the greatest consciousness (self-awareness) of it. It is notable that Darwinian evolution tends to select organisms that best match (or fit) their environments. Hence, consciousness (as defined here) may be the end result of evolution by natural selection.
The selective nature of consciousness which is sometimes called "attention" may be a mechanism within the brain that may select the wave resonance's only with the highest degrees of amplitude. So, what we call attention may be a type of passive device within the brain that selects brain waves of only the highest amplitudes. If there are many such high amplitudes all at once, the environment may become quite confusing and chaotic to the brain. This selection may be due to the mind.
The author proposes here that what we refer to as mind may essentially be a noumenal concept. That is, Immanuel Kant's noumenal (the object-in-itself) may be understood to be the "brain-in-itself". So, the brain may be the phenomenal object, whilst the mind can be viewed as the noumenal aspect(s) of the brain. And so, it may be the brain-in-itself (the mind) that communicates in turn with the brain, selecting only the highest wave peaks in the wave brain. This selection process is what one might call "attention focus". So, consciousness may simply be this selection process in action, whereby the mind governs what aspect(s) of reality upon which it will focus.
Higher dimensional worlds (which do exist in the physical world, but are more remote from us) may be accessed via different resonance alignments. These may be the mind shifting its focus to other aspects of the unconscious mind. But, it is not necessarily mentally healthy for an individual to shift attention focus away from ordinary states of mind. Such states may be induced by drugs, certain meditative states or certain forms of mental illness. More about this in the next section.
When one loses consciousness, for example, when one sleeps, the brain-system may become out-of-phase with the environmental resonance's. The brain apparently must become out-of-phase with the environment from time to time--one must sleep. The process of reawakening may be the brain once again quickly harmonizing and readapting itself to new environmental conditions and new resonance's. Sometimes, this realignment with the environmental waves may be somewhat slow and drugs taken internally may sharpen and quicken the phase alignment process. Coffee (containing the widely-used drug Caffeine) is often the drug of choice to quicken this transition.
It is notable that heat (or a high fever) may cause a person to experience delirium, perhaps, because an increase in heat essentially increases the vibrations of matter-waves. Thus, the excess heating of the brain may cause changes in resonance's frequencies or create its own where none previously existed. Hence, attention may be thrown into an overall chaotic state because too many resonance's all at once may have high wave amplitudes. The mind may then become over-stimulated and confused. The precise regulation of the temperature of the brain may, therefore, be vital to the wave system's proper functioning. Hence, a dramatic change in temperature may change all aspects of mental functioning.
Other Drugs And The Brain
Certain "brain" drugs (some of them only available on the street) can cause a shift of phase in particular regions of brain resonance's. Drugs may then shift the brain slightly out-of-phase with environmental wave signals. In the case of some psychiatric drugs, an individual who is "normally" out-of-phase with (and whose mind has exited this reality) environmental waves can be shifted by drugs to be more in-phase with the environment. Hence, it must be the case that drugs that largely act on the brain, can temporally and artificially shift the matter-wave resonance's (or wave phase) within the brain-system to either match or mismatch the environmental resonance's. Street drugs also shift the wave phase leading to their effects upon an individual.
Mental Illness
Mental illness may, therefore, be a normal tendency for some individuals to have a brain that on the whole is slightly out-of-phase with incoming environmental inputs. This can be seen as generalized confusion, misinterpretations, delusions, hallucinations or paranoia. Particular regions of the brain may have resonance's that are out-of-phase with environmental inputs. The noumenal mind may then have guided the brain to shift wave phase, adapting to an unpleasant environmental experience. The mind, therefore, may have opted to look internally instead of outwardly i.e., away from the outward discomfort and painfulness of experience.
It is sometimes the case that an individual's illness can grant particular brain regions a greater degree of being in-phase, than do other "normal" people. Hence, such persons may command greater insights in certain areas (while they have explored inwardly), whilst in many cases being very deficient in outward appearances. It can be understood in the case of manic-depressive illness (or bipolar disorder), that these shifts of phase can also be of a cyclical nature. The ebb and flow of wave cycles guided by the mind.
In bipolar disorder, a generalized wave amplitude increase in-phase (of all waves) will make one energetic and insightful for a time resonating intensively with environmental inputs. A lack of sleep may eventually send the person on a rapid spiral downward (without any medications), when chaotic out-of-focus, out-of-phase waves can be introduced into the mix that may disrupt the resonance's. So, the in-phase harmonics may be destroyed eventually by unwanted out-of-phase wavelengths. A "crash and burn" may then follow as the high amplitude resonance's turn utterly chaotic and the person falls head first into the "black dog" of depression. A highly depressed person may have no wave amplitudes worth selecting from!
Or, viewed somewhat differently, this might be pictured essentially in terms of a signal to noise ratio. Thus, the overall signal to noise ratio of the brain begins leaning toward the more chaotic noise; this noise may lead to the eventual nosedive. Hence, the mental wellness of a person might be measured in general by the degree of background noise that a person's brain is producing, whilst the overall signals become dampened.
The newer medications may work by dampening the subsequent chaotic out-of-phase waves (and noise), but leaving essentially intact the hypo-manic high amplitude state. So, these medications may simply eliminate the out-of-phase waves. The older medications tended to dampen all the waves too much leaving a person with an overall flat mood or affect. So, the older medications tended to dampen both signal along with noise!
Electro-convulsive therapy treatments (ECT or shock treatments) in the severely depressed might be viewed as a way to realign (by sending very powerful and often destructive resonance's in the form of electricity--another waveform) the resonance structures to match more closely environmental inputs. Thus, electroshock may alter the wave phase, perhaps, through destroying neuronal wave connections of the matter-wave brain.
ECT therapy may demonstrate (and may in fact demonstrate) that the brain must indeed be a waveform (which is the hypothesis proposed by this text), since it is well-known that electricity has its own wavelike characteristics i.e., frequency, wavelength and speed etc.. So, Memory erase techniques such as this can best be explained by viewing the brain as a wave-like system and the electricity (another waveform as doing the key job). Magnetic forms of ECT may be similar as matter has both electrical as well as magnetic components, hence, both electricity and magnetism may operate in a similar fashion.

Neuron Cells As Wave Systems
It is notable that sensory (as well as all other) neuronal connections to and from the brain involve electricity. In living systems, electric current is generated by the movement of either positive ions (such as Na+, K+ and Ca^2+) or negative ions (such as Cl - ), all of which are common in both cytoplasm and extra-celluar fluid (Levine & Miller, 1991).
Similar to a battery, the nerve cells develop an electrical potential or voltage. The neurons develop voltages because specialized proteins in their plasma membranes use energy from ATP (cell energy acquired from food) to pump sodium ions out of the cell as they pump potassium ions into the cell. The action of this protein which is called the "sodium-potassium pump", essentially raises the concentration of sodium ions outside the cell to ten times the concentration of sodium ions inside (Levine & Miller, 1991).
The nerve cells are not absolutely impermeable -- the cells tend to leak sodium ions and potassium ions. The end result of this is that the potassium becomes more concentrated inside the cell than outside. So, the interior of the cell becomes negatively charged with respect to its immediate surroundings. This is known as the cells "resting potential". As previously mentioned, the resting potential is calibrated by the environment.
The nerve cells have channels on their membranes that are gated--they open and close like gates in a fence. Electrically controlled channels are pores that open and close when the electrical potential across the cell membrane changes. Action potentials are brief changes in the membrane's electrical potential that sweep along the axon. Although action potentials are also called nerve impulses, they are not pulses of electricity that travel through the axon; they are disturbances in the resting potential that move along the membrane like ripples passing along the surface of a quiet stream (Levine & Miller, 1991). Essentially, this is because the action potentials behave like waves!!
So, once started, the action potential (like a wave) is self propagating, it will travel down the axon with no further input of energy from the cell. The action potential begins when the nerve cell depolarizes to its threshold. As soon as threshold is reached, large numbers of electrically controlled sodium channels spring open, and positively charged sodium ions rush into the cell. When the current flows, the potential decreases. After the sodium channels have opened and then closed, there is a brief period of time called the refractory period (Levine & Miller, 1991).
The author could simply go on and on with this "chemical" explanation of nerve cells. The point of importance here is that nerve cells are wave systems!! The cell body is the "medium" for the electrical wave disturbance. Once disturbed by depolarization (a negative current stimulus), there is a fluctuation in the resting electrical potential that travels along the axon medium. This resonance eventually communicates with other nerve cells via the synaptic gaps. Synaptic gaps are how resonance's spread information from nerve cell to nerve cell.
The stimulus, thus, amounts to an electrical "kick" in the negative direction (a depolarization potential disturbance) to get the wave "going". Indeed, all mechanical waves (and a nerve cell is precisely defined by a wave) need a push or kick for the wave to begin their oscillations. In a nerve cell, this depolarization must necessarily be of an electrical origin!
So, the nerve cell in wave terms goes into a resonant state when it is electrically disturbed. One cell, then, brings all of the others into a kind of resonance. These pathways are resonance's. If the entire brain is composed of these wave systems, the brain itself may in essence be a wave!
Moreover, the author believes that the growth of all brains to maturity are guided by these ongoing resonance's, which "tell" the brain how to further develop itself.
The Holistic Brain
Perhaps, it is also the case that since the author is proposing that neurons are essentially wave systems, that each neuron wave may have its own unique operational frequencies. This should indeed be the case. And so, every neuron wave may also carry with it a literal harmonic spectrum of waves from every other neuron in the brain. This is the "holistic brain concept", where every neuron "knows" about every other neuron in the brain. This is a bit like one piece of a holographic image containing the whole of the picture. And indeed, as stated earlier, this may be true of every cell of the body!
The late physicist David Bohm has proposed that quantum systems behave precisely like this. Indeed, the author is proposing that the brain is in essence nothing more than a huge quantum system that can evolve itself uniquely according to wavelike quantum rules (more evidence to follow). That is, because of its quantum organization, each neuron wave in the brain carries with it spectral wave forms from every other neuronal wave in the brain. Hence, every neuron essentially has an entire picture of collective brain activity stored within the spectrum of its particular waves. This is similar to each cell in the body having the same DNA sequence stored therein. In this way, cells in our bodies are holistic as well. If standard cells in the body, why not nerve "cells". However, in this case, the information is stored as a spectrum of associated waves. Thus, every neuron wave has information about every other "cell".
So, in may be understood that where harmonic resonance's occur among many neuron waves, one essentially has "a thought". These thoughts can be transferred and brought to the attention of the noumenal mind, if the peaks of the reinforced waves can become high enough i.e., when all neurons do support each other in-phase. If they are not prominent enough (and are but lower resonant peaks), the unconscious mind may tend to handle them internally, without the conscious brain becoming aware of these smaller resonant thoughts i.e. unconsciousness. It is only when the resonance's have gathered sufficient steam and are brought into a wave phase reinforcement, that the conscious mind will then be alerted and action may be taken by the individual concerning these "priorities". High wave peaks, therefore, may yield conscious outward action(s).
Synaptic Particle "Impulses"
At a junction between two neurons is the synapse. The synapse is a minutely small gap, the method by which neurons communicate and resonate with each other. In order for resonance to occur, the traveling wave potential must be actualized into a particle impulse that can traverse the gap. This takes place with the use of neurotransmitter chemicals. With mitochrondrian energy nearby, the wave energy of neuron becomes an impulse of neurochemical energy that spans the synaptic gap (Villee et al, 1985).
Thus, with the intention of creating a new depolarization, the transmitter chemical energy has an effect upon the membrane pores of the postsynaptic neuron. This is the process by which one neuron transfers its resonant energy to the second neuron. However, to accomplish this task the wave energy must become particle (or impulse) energy. So, this transformation of wave into particle and particle into wave goes on and on in the brain. The brain, therefore, may be a quantum system of particles and waves. More evidence for this hypothesis is provided subsequently.
What's Waving?
One might ask the question; if the brain is a matter-wave, exactly what is waving? The author has a rather different explanation of this based upon his other work. The mystery of what is matter is not explained in conventional physics. However, the author will offer his version:
Matter acts like "photon holes". Matter has gravity--exactly as a photon hole would as described in the two texts concerning "Gravity" text at the links below. It may indeed be the case that space exists as a type of foam, a mix of photon holes and ordinary radiation background. Matter, therefore, may be a very dense region where the photon holes are highly dense--a foam grid-like structure. See the "Space-Grid" text at the link below for further details.
A photon hole is a place where a photon was--a subtraction of energy from background radiation. Matter is, hence, a distortion of space itself, a dense region of photon holes. Matter, therefore, also has strong electromagnetic components. Indeed, one can hardly discuss matter without discussing electromagnetic forces and vice versa.
A matter-wave such as the brain is, therefore, a disturbance of space foam, the dense grid-like structure. When disturbed (which is what a resonance is), a resonance of the matter-wave is, hence, also a resonance in the electromagnetic field--the oscillation of electron waves. This is the fundamental reason that brain-waves can be measured directly through the skull on the skin--as electromagnetic energy. Thus, resonance's of the brain are inherently also electromagnetic in nature. It can be understood that the space surrounding the head is very similar to the matter-wave composing the material brain, although vastly less dense.
The space surrounding the skull, therefore, creates a type of field of energy around the head. The surrounding space is made of the same "substance" as matter is, only it is vastly less dense. This grid-like space can, thus, also be set into resonance when the brain is in-resonance.
Such resonance's outside the head or body can be detected by Kerlian photography and these pictures may directly reflect internal moods and brain-states; different resonance's of the neural pathways. Different thoughts, therefore, which are particular sequences of resonance's in the matter composing the brain, are transmitted directly through the head as the vibrations of space itself. See the "GTR" text at the link below for more about the nature of quantum space and matter.
Such space vibrations are often called "auras" and can be viewed with Kerlian photography. If this phenomenon could not be detected by any known means except what some observers claim, the author would consider the topic too subjective for comment--and not sufficiently scientific. However, the fact that there is a methodology for the detection of this phenomenon, indicates to the author that it does indeed deserve an explanation. That is what was attempted here by picturing the brain as a matter-wave.
Brain waves can be understood to be generalized imbalances in the frequency of the resonance's occurring in the brain. Brain waves are, thus, the sum of all the resonance's taking place at any one time. Changes in brain waves under different conditions (for example during sleep) reflect changes in overall states of resonance's within the brain. See the "Electricity" text at the link below for more about frequency imbalances in frequency and electrical currents.
Neuron waves are not exactly like waves of electricity flowing through a wire. The difference is that neuron waves are essentially potentials where "the absence" of charge exists. It is the absence of electrical charge that propagates along the axon. So, in a way, neuronal waves resemble more closely mechanical waves (such as jerking a rope at one end, for example), although electricity and charges are still involved.
Mental Telepathy
The author proposes two models for mental telepathy:
(1) The Electromagnetic Model: It appear likely that considering this picture of the brain that a wave-resonance of the brain might produce also electromagnetic waves. The vibration of electrons during a resonance may produce electromagnetic radiation emitted outward in all directions. This admitted hypothesis, however, is a step somewhat beyond what the author can prove.
For example, it is not known at what frequency such radiation would be emitted by the brain and if the brain can receive as well as send messages. Perhaps, it might be the case that brains send and receive electromagnetic signals much as tuning forks across a room can go into resonance. That is, if the harmonic frequency is the same, two tuning forks can vibrate each other. So, perhaps, wave neuronal systems will resonate each other, if they are of an identical frequency. This remains the author's speculation based upon the model given in this text.
Moreover, how might messages or information be encoded by the brain? And so, these are all left as open questions, for the next interested person to further investigate. The author will halt his logical deductions at this point concerning telepathy and electromagnetic waves. If this "electromagnetic model" of mental telepathy has some difficulties (which it may), the author wishes to put forth a second model for mental telepathy. This might be called the "noumenal model" of mental telepathy based upon the work of Immanuel Kant.
(2) The Noumenal Model: It has been Kant's model of reality that has been so very useful to this author's thinking along this same pathway. So, the author proposes that the brain is the phenomenal (or sensory experience) of the mind, which itself is the essence of Kant's noumenal things-in-themselves. This is to say that the brain is the phenomenal experience of the mind. Or, stated differently, the mind is the noumenal brain. Either definition of which can be considered correct.
It can be understood further that communication between any two or more brains is directly impossible (unless one considers model # 1 above). But, at the noumenal level, this might not be impossible. So, two or more minds might possibly communicate within the realm of the noumenal reality, with the brains beyond our sensory experience (our minds). Thus, the two brains may indirectly communicate via the two minds.
Phenomenal Level To Noumenal ----------- A Linkage Occurs -------------- Noumenal To Phenomenal Level
Henceforth, Brain # 1 ---- Mind #1 ----- A Noumenal Communication Occurs --- Mind # 2 ---- Brain # 2
Yes, there is no doubt of a connection between a brain and its own associative mind and further there may be a connection between two or more minds at the noumenal level. The noumenal connection, however, must remain the author's speculation at best. However, the author has now put these ideas out there for examination!
Indeed, it might be understood that there is some kind of connectedness of all things within the noumenal existence! Yes, the things-in-themselves may all be some kind of an entwined continuum. Yes, that is what is proposed here! However, these kinds of connections may not exist in our personal "phenomenal" experiences, or at least not directly so. But, indirectly, via the noumena --- Perhaps!
The Wave-Brain, God And Spiritual Awakenings
Update February 2004: The author now believes that it is possible for significant spiritual insights to occur when powerful resonance's (with the physical environment) do take place in an area of the brain called the temporal lobe. This is sometimes called "temporal lobe epilepsy" or TLE. While TLE is often viewed as a disability, the author proposes that this is actually a kind of gift granted to particular individuals who have had such significant insight. Moses, Einstein, Jesus, the Buddha, Sir Isaac Newton, Socrates or even Vincent van Gogh are but a few standout individuals who may have been granted the gift of these kinds of deep spiritual awakenings (Pickover, 1998).
Indeed, the author now believes that there is no significant difference between a common mental breakdown and a severe religious experience. They will appear to be identical (and may be), much like the Apostle Paul falling off of his horse on the road to Damascus. He was blind and insane for days before his eventual recovery. Paul is usually credited for Christianity being the powerful force in the World as it is today. Christianity may not have survived past Roman times without him.
So, the effect of these kinds of brain differences might actually be due to directly access the noumenal World. This may mean that in some cases that normal functioning for such an individual can be a problem. In other cases, normal functioning may not be an issue.
Jesus supposed comment in the Thomas Gospel that: "the Kingdom of Heaven is spread across the face of the Earth and men just do not see it" suggests to the author that Jesus was speaking about the things-in-themselves, the noumenal existence. In the author's opinion, Jesus was in essence suggesting that Heaven is the same as Kant's noumenal World. If that might be the case, then one's own mind may also be part of this level of existence, part of both God and Heaven.
If this is true, then there may be an intimate connection between the mind and God. What is called "soul" is but yet another noumenal conception, in the same category as these other (beyond our ordinary experience) ideas. Henceforth, when we speak of "our mind" in everyday conversations (as we often do), we are actually are making reference to "an object" that lies forever beyond our experience. God, soul and heaven are similar noumenal notions, phenomenal references to that which lies beyond all thought (and thinking).
The author also grants that certain psychedelic drugs (for example LSD) may grant certain individuals closer access into the wavy noumenal reality. Often, such street drugs can mimic the mental illness psychotic state in such a way that particular insights into the noumenal World may be attained. The many users of these drugs have described for us in detail their unusual experiences. There may be a noumenal connection here.
So, the author will now propose the next conclusion, that all of existence must be supernatural! This unifies the natural with the supernatural. Yes, they must actually be one and the same!
All Of Existence Is Supernatural!
It seems that science and religion are in yet another argument! The logic of this disagreement is as follows: Religion is arguing that the part of the brain we call consciousness has an interface with God. This is sometimes called the mind-body duality problem as first put forth by Rene Descarte. But, recent scientific evidence demonstrates that this long time assertion may be incorrect. And so, there may actually be no scientific evidence for a supernatural part of the brain, despite what many religious types usually assert must be present. Indeed, logically the author concurs that this nature -- super-nature deduction by Descarte was probably an inaccurate deduction from the beginning. Why? The two may actually be one --- so, both are supernatural.
It's a bit like the old Greek idea that the laws for the Heaven's and the Earth are physically separate. The laws in the Heavens and here on the Earth are both distinctly unique. Newton, Kepler and Galileo and others put an end to this logical inconsistency. But, we now essentially have yet another discrepancy between science and religion, this time over the mind and consciousness. The author believes that we can still avoid all of this unnecessary debating and in-fighting! How? The Unification of the two states, as in the Greek debate, may resolve the issue. How can this be done?
The solution to this dilemma may be relatively simple. Here it is: All of existence must be supernatural! That is, there can be no brain interface with the supernatural, because everything is and has always been supernatural! So, our brains have always been connected intimately with the supernatural. There is simply no change of laws within the brain! Indeed, the two are essentially unified! From the author's perspective, that we have scientific laws that nature may always follow does not at all change this fact! Yes, now we can build all this "fancy" technology to do all these tremendous technical things to "advance" our species; well, so great for us! Yes, we can go to the Moon and find there is not too much there!
In actual fact, every scientist stands more than anyone else in complete awe of the Universe (and rightfully so). Indeed, many more scientists than theologians are utterly dumbfounded by the width and breath of scientific discoveries (which the theologians often don't grasp as well), yet (surprisingly!!) it is the scientific community who mostly claim that all of this has happened "by pure chance". Furthermore, they have the complete nerve to claim that all can be explained just by following science (and the scientific method) -- such utter rubbish! There are simply too many questions that science cannot even ask, yet alone answer. It seems to this author that scientists should the ones who should be calling it super-nature! -- and not the theologians. After all, it is the scientists who know best the limits of scientific explanations and have direct access to the most fantastic of discoveries of science. Yet, scientists still claim they have a handle on all of the answers (at least during any public discussions). Yes, they know all (according to them).
But, how about tough questions like: What causes gravity? What is matter? What is mass? What is motion? How can fields exist in empty space? What holds electrons in their energy levels? These are the kinds of questions (among many others) that are usually omitted from open to the public scientific discussions (often for philosophical reasons). Openly, such questions are often labeled as "being meaningless" and so on. However, these questions are only meaningless due to the fact that they don't know the answers!! If scientists had such answers as these, surely they would instead be focusing on these as yet another of the great accomplishments of science. Would they not??! But, since they do not know these answers, they are considered "meaningless". "Meaningless" in this case means ignorance!
The point here is not to bash (although I did do that a bit) the scientific establishment for not knowing difficult questions (that the best minds in science have struggled extensively with), but to state here that all scientific theories (including my own) are always in some sense incomplete. They can only be partial theories at best, subject always to improved ones in the future. The author recommends reading physicists S. W. Hawking and R. P. Feynman on this subject. In a different form, they essentially restate the same arguments as does this author. The author is simply agreeing wholeheartedly with them on this subject.
But, the author takes this incompleteness one step further. That would be that all of nature is by its essence supernatural. We can never understand nature beyond a certain unknowable limit. The closer we look, the more we run into paradoxes, at all levels. In the final analysis, our theories simply show us how little we know about matters, and how limited our scope actually is. Hence, if we see all of nature as being super-nature, there can be no conflict about this supposed duality interface in the brain. Why? Because, God, Heaven, the Soul and what we call "the mind" all exist within the noumenal realm itself. So, the author concludes that "super-nature" as well as unanswerable questions are literally everywhere our eyes happen to gaze. "Heaven", to paraphrase Jesus in another Gospel passage, " is all around you". So, all of reality becomes unified on the side of super-nature. Yes, all essentially is supernatural!
Indeed, this conclusion must be in essence correct; we must live in a supernatural existence, despite what facts science has discovered about nature. And so, there is more still to learn about it! Indeed, there will always be more to uncover about it, despite the extremely tiresome (for this author) smugness of modern scientists. Yes, there is always more to learn! We must be prepared to learn. But, more knowledge will not halt the flow of unanswered questions. It only creates more! The deeper we look, the more depth we find.
Does The Consciousness Operate Backward-In-Time? -- Does This Fact Demonstrate A Quantum Mechanical Brain?
There exists substantial evidence that time has been found to be missing in certain experimental findings. This result has been noted by experimentalists for decades. That is, in one experiment, if a person was asked to flex his wrist whenever he feels like it --- an act of "free will". As expected, just prior to the actual wrist flex there is electrical brain activity. Meanwhile, the subject is asked to report the exact time of his subjective intention using a rapidly moving clock he is watching. The experiment is to measure the delay from the subjective will to the earliest electrical activity. Just one problem: when measured, the result comes out negative! The electrode responds before the decision is experienced! Some 300 milliseconds give or take, are missing (Carley, 1994).
In a second experiment, called the "phi phenomena", the illusion that alternating flashing (e.g. police car) lights move back and forth. It is easy to show that one light appears to move toward the other a split-second before the other flashes. All experiences are created after the fact (Carley, 1994). Once again, the brain may be able to operate backward-in-time!
All of this suggests to the author that consciousness can operate in both directions of time, both forward and backward. At the quantum level, no distinction is then made between forward and backward time directions in particle experiments. The laws of physics do not define a time direction. But, isn't the brain a macro-system, and subject to classical Newtonian laws; apparently not! Apparently, as experimental evidence shows above, the brain is a macro-quantum system and, therefore, can switch time directions when necessary. This is yet another demonstration that, not only is the brain a huge quantum mechanical system, but also that we exist in a supernatural realm, where further investigation of it leads to eventual paradox. So, the brain interfaces directly with the noumenal mind, the place where paradox originates.
Conclusion
The "brain as a matter-wave" proposal has the following probable consequences:
1) Long-term potentiation is equivalent to a resonance.
2) Long-term depression is equivalent to a dampening.
3) Thoughts are sequences of resonance's throughout the various regions of the brain.
4) In early development, resonance's are sent by the senses and "discover" chance identical resonance's within the brain. These, then, become the regions in the brain that are further developed for a particular sense or other function. This is the primary reason (in the author's view) that different brains have evolved differently.
5) Consciousness is the close matching of the brain resonance's with environmental resonance's. Darwinian evolution stresses a similar fit with the environment, although in this case this fit is described in terms of matching resonance's.
6) Attention focus (as an aspect of consciousness) may be a selective process whereby the brain singles-out the peak resonant amplitudes for its own focus. Many peak amplitudes all at once can cause chaos and confusion.
7) Drugs may bring brain resonance's either out-of-phase with the environmental resonance's or in the case of psychiatric medications refocus the phase of the brain to the physical environment.
8) The nerve cells that compose the brain are themselves (and act precisely like) wave systems. If nerve cells are wave systems, so is the brain itself. See above for details.
9) Kerlian photography and auras are resonance's of space outside the physical head or body and thoughts as different resonance's may cause alterations of this phenomenon. This is related also to measurable brain-waves on the outside of the head.
10) Heating-up of the brain (a fever) changes the resonance's of the brain and may cause the experience of delirium.
11) The appearance of the brain may be related to the wave resonance's taking place within the brain.
12) The matter-wave brain system might emit electromagnetic waves in all directions--a type of mental telepathy, perhaps. The noumenal model is a telepathy proposal whereby minds communicate with each other.
13) The Unification of nature with the supernatural can be accomplished by seeing all as supernatural. That we have laws of physics makes little difference. Even chaos has an order to it i.e., it follows laws.
14) Backward-in-time consciousness phenomena add weight to the hypothesis that the brain is a macro-matter wave quantum mechanical system. See the experimental evidence above.
15) The mind is the noumenal brain; the brain is the phenomenal aspects of the mind.
16) Every neuron carries in the form of frequencies the information contained in all the neurons in the brain. In this way, the brain is a whole.
17) Each cell's DNA drives (through wave resonant energy from food) brain evolution and development.
